Smith and Drescher

Rep. Adam Smith Endorses a Card-Carrying Republican 

People who don't ordinarily follow Newcastle, Washington politics aren't going to know this, pretty much, but Representative Adam Smith, Democrat from Washington state, actually endorsed a card-carrying Republican, John Drescher, for Newcastle City Council.  Drescher supported George W. Bush and John McCain, respectively, in two recent presidential elections (2004 & 2008).  Smith is the same rightist Democrat (the kind of Democrats also known as "Blue Dogs") who benefitted from the other curious election of 2004, though unwittingly.

Smith's voting record is like a dream to America's far right wing, shown here as follows:

Congressman Adam Smith has voted for the following (pretty much not in accordance with his district):

  • the national defense authorization act proviso that ends Habeas Corpus (judicial review for persons who are jailed), even for American citizens, though clearly unconstitutional;
  • the 2002 Iraq War resolution;
  • Gramm, Leach, Bliley Act (the law that effectively dismantled the Glass-Steagall Act);
  • Wall Street bail-outs;
  • nuclear energy deal with India (despite that this involves the energy sector, the deal undermined the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty);
  • the 2001 Patriot Act and 2011 Patriot Extension Act, acts that are overbroad and have enabled the N.S.A.'s (and other agencies) overreaching, out-of-control surveillance of law-abiding American citizens.

Adam Smith is not the least bit concerned about the wishes of the majority of his 9th District constituents (Federal Way, Bellevue, Mercer Island, Newcastle, Renton, Kent, Tukwila, SeaTac and N.E. Alternative Reality

We live in an age where many people say there needs to be an alternative to the two major parties, and then march right into the voting booth, at least the metaphorical booth, and cast their vote for the same old parties. Ladies and gentlemen, casting a vote is the exercise in power that the multitudes have that can bring to power the alternative that we say we want. The Hutchison Slate

In the major league sports world, it is considered unsportsmanlike to run up the score against an opponent to some outlandish degree. That's why in football, when the score is something like 50 - 3, the coach that is ahead puts in substitutes. Reagan Dunn's campaign apparently has no such compunction, in fact he is bringing out the first team to pile up the score (although, he'll need 90% of the primary vote to claim a "win"). Two county councilmembers, Kathy Lambert and Bob Ferguson, both of whom have free passes to their own re-elections (uncontested districts), are effectively helping Dunn. Lambert assisted with and her likeness appeared in a ubiquitous taxpayer-funded county brochure with Dunn. Ferguson and Dunn co-authored an article that appeared in the newspaper of record for Dunn supporters, the "Sound Publishing/Reporter" publications.
